Definitions:

Copyright: "A bundle of intangible rights granted by statute to the author or originator of certain literary or artistic productions, whereby, for a limited period, the exclusive privilege is given to that person (or toany party to whom he or she transfers ownership) to make copies of the same for publication and sale" (Source)

Copyright Infringement: "Copyright infringement involves any violation of the exclusive rights of the copyright owner. It may be unintentional or intentional." (Source)

Fair Use: "Fair use is a judicial doctrine that refers to a use of copyrighted material that does not infringe or violate the exclusive rights of the copyright holder. Fair use is an important and well established limitation on the exclusive right of copyright owners. (Source)

Holders of a Copyright: " A copyright is initially owned by the author or authors of the work, except in the case of a "work for hire." (Source)

Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators.
  • The Creative Commons series of licenses are the product of the Creative Commons Corporation, a not-for-profit organization founded in 2001 and currently based at Stanford University Law School.
  • The fundamental purpose of open licensing is to deny anybody the right to exclusively exploit a work.
  • All the Creative Commons Licenses permit the free copying and distribution of the licensed work.

NoDerivatives - If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
