What is a Standard?

A standard is a "documented agreement containing technical specifications or other precise criteria to be used consistently as rules, guidelines or definitions of characteristics, to ensure that materials, products, process and services are fit for purpose." (ISO).

According to South African standards, a standard is:

  • A voluntary document that outlines specifications, procedures, and guidelines to ensure that products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable

  • A document that can cover a wide range of areas, including consumer products, services, the environment, construction, energy, water utilities, and more

Standards are:

  • Practical documents that set achievable and clear goals

  • Developed using the latest industry, scientific, and consumer knowledge

  • Regularly reviewed and updated to stay relevant and effective
