Discover the world of information

It is expected of you to read wider than only one source on a given topic. Usually your lecturer provides you with a list of sources to consult (this includes prescribed readings and recommended readings). In order for you to show to your lecturer that you understand the topic you need to use and apply a number of different readings. It is therefore best to know the differences between different sources. At the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Explain information sources
  • Determine different types of information sources for different purposes
  • Determine where and how to find information sources in the library

Information sources

We need information on a daily basis and this kind of information and format differs according to our information needs.

Scenario:
You have to write a research report on Urban pollution and health risks. Now, this topic sounds as if the information must be recently researched, in-depth and credible. In order for you to show to your lecturer that you understand the topic you need to use and apply a number of different readings.

What information do I need and what am I going to use?
